SOUTH SOUND BUSINESS - Alexis Harroun grew up in Federal Way and respects the depth of South Sound’s manufacturing heritage, so it’s no surprise she chose to start her company there in 2023 to develop a new rocket engine powered by advanced propulsion technology.

Harroun, a propulsion engineer turned entrepreneur, is co-founder and CEO of Juno Propulsion, which is developing rotating detonation engines,or RDEs, using a new combustion method called detonation — a process the company says releases more energy, provides more thrust, is more fuel efficient, allows larger payloads, and also burns greener fuel.

Juno and Harroun represent a segment of South Sound and the Kent Valley aiming for the stars — players in a growing space sector comprising everyone from companies milling precise parts for rockets, satellites, engines, and more, to startup rocket maker Stoke Space, to established space company Blue Origin, which was founded in 2000 and designs and manufactures heavy-lift rockets, transporters, landers, orbiters, and systems to explore space.
